Reiki is based on the idea that energy flows through the body. Dr. Mikao Usui found reiki in the 1920’s.
The word “reiki” comes from two Japanese words: “rei,” which means universal, and “ki,” which means life-force energy.
It is a gentle and non-invasive form of energy healing that promotes relaxation, reduces stress, helps to balance the body's energy centers, and strengthens the immune system.
The reiki practitioner uses gentle touch or hovers the hands above the body, working with meridians similar to acupuncture, to help guide reiki energy in a way that promotes balance and healing. This allows the individual to enter a parasympathetic state to support their body’s natural healing process.
Our society typically promotes a lifestyle that makes us live in a sympathetic (fight or flight) state. Reiki brings the receiver into a parasympathetic state and in this state the body’s priority is to recover, heal, deeply nourish and restore itself.

You will lay on a massage table, fully clothed, and the practitioner will place their hands, or hover their hands, on various parts of the body, starting at the head and ending at the feet.
During the session you may experience the state between wakefulness and sleep, you may see colours, feel emotions, work through thoughts, or simply just relax and not experience any of the above. You will receive reiki in silence with ambient music. No divination or channeling will occur.

The practitioner acts as a channel between the client and reiki energy. The practitioner is attuned to reiki energy and guides the energy to various areas of the clients body.
Reiki energy flowing through the practitioners hands emenates at a bio magnetic reading of 7-10hz (theta and alpha range), greater than a non-practitioner. This affects the electrical currents of the nervous system allowing the body to heal itself naturally.

Refrain from the use of any recreational drugs 24 hours prior to the session. Come dressed in comfortable clothing, remove all jewelry, and shoes before we begin. Please bring water.

Reiki can be used to address a wide range of physical, emotional, and spiritual issues, including stress, anxiety, pain, fatigue, and more. It promotes overall physical and emotional well-being and can be used to complement traditional medical treatments.
Click here for a peer-reviewed journal article where they found that Reiki was an effective approach in relieving pain.

Click here for a medical journal article where it was found that Reiki is better than a placebo in activating the parasympathetic nervous system, as measured by reduced heart rate, reduced blood pressure, and increased heart rate variability.
For patients with chronic health conditions, Reiki has been found to be more effective than placebo for reducing pain, anxiety, and depression, and for improving self-esteem and quality of life. According to the neurovisceral integration model and the polyvagal theory, these effects are due to higher parasympathetic nervous system activity, mediated via the vagus nerve.Click here for an April 2024 study in which reiki reduced blood cortisol levels and anxiety levels in patients with cardiac disease.

Reiki is not a cure for any health condition. Instead, Reiki should be regarded as a complementary therapy that can be implemented alongside all other medical and therapeutic techniques. I do not diagnose, treat or prescribe medication for ailments, illnesses or diseases that are physical or psychological. Please seek advice from a licensed medical professional for these concerns.

Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to receive reiki. In fact, reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not.

At the time of your appointment you will find a quiet room with a comfortable place to rest and receive (lay down or sit). You’re welcome to create a healing space with candles and music. We will be on a video call together and I will send reiki energy. Before the appointment I will contact you with a form to fill out as well as emailing a photo of yourself. During a session, you may feel the same sensations as in an in-person session.

24-hours notice is required to cancel your in person or distance reiki appointment, or to re-schedule.

To come back to yourself. To pause and take a moment to listen to your inner guidance, or maybe to learn what that voice sounds like. To gain fitness and flexibility for longterm health. When you can dedicate time and energy to caring for yourself you can then take that care and share it outwardly with others, spreading love and kindness.
Yoga improves strength, flexibility, and balance. It's great for cardiovascular health. It can help manage stress and in turn assist with sleep quality.
Yoga improves mental health and reduces inflammation. It can help with burnout and brain health.

The studio's I teach at use radiant heat instead of forced hot air. Radiant heat includes heat from the sun. This type of heat directly heats the object, in this case, heating your body during a yoga class, mimicking the natural warmth of the sun's rays (cazimi much!). This helps your muscles feel more relaxed, assist in cardiovascular function, and detoxification. Studio's that use radiant heat also lower their environmental footprint.

Arrive 15-20 minutes before class starts to sign in, speak to the instructor, get to know your community, change, and get comfortable on your yoga mat before class starts.
Wear comfortable clothing you don't mind sweating in. Bring a yoga mat, towel, and water bottle. If you have a block and/or strap you're welcome to bring that as well. If you don't have a yoga mat call the studio to see if they have any to rent.

Just show up with no expectations for yourself, your teacher, or those in class with you.
There is no pressure in my class to look a certain way, bend a certain way, or breathe a certain way. Show up as your authentic self with the only intention being to connect deeper with your self.
You may feel clumsy or silly during your first few classes, or like you don't belong, but I challenge you to put those feelings aside for a few weeks. Give yourself permission to be uncomfortable in a new space, on your mat, to try something new that could greatly benefit you.
“Whether you’re a couch potato or a professional athlete, size and fitness levels do not matter because there are modifications for every yoga pose and beginner classes in every style,” says Dr. Nevins. “The idea is to explore your limits, not strive for some pretzel-like perfection. It is a great way to get in tune with your body and your inner self.”
